Neurodivergency
What does it mean to be neurodivergent?
The world is full of diversity - diverse species, diverse hair colour, diverse habitats and, thankfully, diverse brains. Since 1998 neurodiversity has been used as an umbrella term for people who process information differently, and includes diagnoses such as ADHD, Dyslexia, and Autism.
Because neurodiversity is a biological characteristic that differentiates us all, the correct terminology to use for the group of people who do not identify with being neurotypical is in fact neurodivergent. To learn more about terminology, including discussion of the neurodiverse movement and the neurodiversity paradigm, this is an excellent article
Neurodivergency is a spectrum, with each form having a wide range of characteristics; no two people who are neurodivergent are the same in the same way that no two people are the same. It is important to note that neurodivergency is not a disorder, it is a difference.
